We believe all those wonderful children’s books sitting on shelves throughout the community are a valuable resource that can be shared and reused for the greater good. The Children’s Book Bank was established to provide the community with a place for families to donate the books their children have outgrown. Our system for gathering, cleaning and distributing books, moves books off shelves and into the hands and homes of kids in need.
We believe the book gap is a problem we can solve with broad community involvement. The Children’s Book Bank engages schools, businesses, faith groups, civic groups, individuals, scouts, teams, etc. in collecting and preparing donated books for distribution.
We believe children need to be surrounded by books at home. The Children’s Book Bank doesn’t give away a book here and a book there. Instead, each child we serve receives a bag full of a variety of books to experience and enjoy including a mix of concept books, picture books, story books, and books about the world around us.
We believe early literacy education is important to changing family reading behaviors. The Children’s Book Bank intentionally partners with organizations that are already providing parent education about reading aloud to young children. Children’s Book Bank supports these existing efforts by ensuring families have lots of books at home to share with their children.
We believe excitement about books can be contagious when books are common rather than scarce in a community. The Children’s Book Bank strives to serve entire communities at a time in order to support and encourage a culture of books and reading within that community.
